Department Outstanding Teaching Award: John Morgan Each year the Department of Industrial and Graphic Design Student Advisory Council selects a faculty member to receive this recognition. This year the council utilized a very thoughtful and democratic methodology in the selection process. John Morgan should be particularly proud of his selection to receive this award. Professor Morgan, now in his 30th year of teaching graphic design at Auburn, has taught at least 15 difference freshman through graduate level courses. He played a pivotal role as program chair in graphic design’s move to the CADC in 2007. As an outcome of this move he has taken on a section of Graphic Design History, initiated an experimental letterpress printing course, and is participating in the first industrial / graphic design cross disciplinary studio. Through his international reputation and passion for animatronics, John has been invited, over the past four summers, to teach at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking in Franklin, Indiana, the largest school of its type in the U.S. At the fall CADC Convocation John was awarded a Department of Industrial and Graphic Design Excellence Award for his service as Graphic Design Program Chair. Department Distinguished Service Award: Jon Thompson Jon Thompson received his BFA in Graphic Design from Auburn in 1992. He worked as Art Director for the University of Alabama / Birmingham from 1993-1996 where he concepted, planned and art directed UAB Magazine, the alumni magazine for the university. Jon joined the Southern Progress Corporation in 1997 and assumed various art direction positions with Southern Living Magazine ultimately rising to the role of Creative Director. While with Southern Progress Corporation, Jon traveled abroad as part of an editorial exchange program. In London, working alongside colleagues at the International Publishing Company (IPC,) Jon was exposed to IPCs operations and strategies, some of which he brought back for application at Southern Living. Jon has been an adjunct professor of design at Samford University and is a founding GDES member on the Auburn University Department of Industrial and Graphic Design Advisory Council. Jon has hosted extensive tours at Southern Living for GDES faculty and students. Recently Jon has been appointed by Auburn University as Director of Special Events to foster relationships between AU’s Office of the President / Board of Trustees and the university campus and community at large. |

INDD Outstanding Under Grad:Alysha Kambeyanda Alysha Kambeyanda is from Huntsville, AL and graduated from Grissom High School in 2007. She has been an avid soccer player since the age of ten and continues to play Intramural soccer with girls from her 2006 High School State Championship team. This year Alysha is serving as a member of the War Eagle Girls and Plainsmen and as an Honors College Ambassador. She is a resident assistant on campus, and member of the ODK National Leadership Society, as well as Phi Kappa Phi and Golden Key International Honor Society. Alysha has been on the Dean’s list every semester since fall 2007 and currently maintains an overall GPA of 3.97. Last semester Alysha ran for Miss Auburn, was one of the top finalists, and still hopes to carry out her platform of promoting awareness of hunger issues. She completed a minor in Spanish and participated on a Spanish language study abroad program in the summer of 2009. For the past two years Alysha has been a DJ for WEGL 91.1 FM radio. She will be graduating with a degree in Industrial Design in May 2011. Department Outstanding Grad Student: Zhan Zhang (absent) Zhan Zhang completed her bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design at Nanjing University of Science and Technology, and was ranked #1 in her class with a 3.87 GPA. As an undergraduate Zhan served as Vice President of the student union in her college and received numerous national design awards. After completing a year-long internship with IOIO, a top 10 Chinese design firm, she applied and was accepted to the Industrial Design graduate program at Auburn. As a graduate student her design for the “Iris” chair won recognition at the IWF Design Emphasis 2010 competition, the largest industry exhibition of its type in the world. Her design participation in the Emerson Studio Collaboration also received recognition from the St Louis, MO based Emerson Tool Company. Zhan is currently in Michigan on a year-long fellowship with Herman Miller, Inc, a highly coveted and competitive appointment, pursuing furniture design and ergonomic research. |

GDES Outstanding Under Grad: Katie Lee Katie’s graphic design career began as year book editor in high school, 2004, 2005. She attended Calhoun Community College and the University of North Alabama before pursuing her BFA in Graphic Design at Auburn. She has been on the Dean’s list during every semester of her college education. During the summers of 2006 thru 2009 she was a Graphics Assistant developing marketing presentations at Dynetics, Inc. Huntsville, AL. At Auburn Katie worked for the Alabama Extension Service and completed the 2009-2010 Annual for the CADC Design Build Program. Her work has been exhibited in graphic design and fine art juried exhibitions at the Biggin Gallery and she has served as AIGA Student Chapter Vice President in 2009 and 2010. |

Regan Scholarship: Andrew McErlean (GDES) Andrew attended West Plano High School in Plano, Texas, ranked one of the top public schools in the United States by Newsweek Magazine 2010. At West Plano High Andrew did a number of graphic promotional designs for various school activities. He entered Auburn in 2008 and received the Joyce and Roger Lethander Merit Award-Biggin Gallery Show 2009, Student Juried Show-Biggin Gallery 2010 and has had numerous photographs and design works published in Auburn’s Circle Magazine. Andrew served as a graphic designer for AU’s WEGL 91.1 FM radio station from 2008 to 2009. He has been a graphic design consultant to State & Buttercup Jewelry Closets and currently works with Create TWO Design Studio. He has designed websites for The Villager Page Imagery and Calypso’s Sports Bar and Grill. |
