The Junior Honors Program

The Junior Honors Program has been developed to provide Honors students the benefits of a small college environment based on Auburn’s Core Curriculum. Students who complete it receive the Junior Honors Certificate. To earn a Junior Honors Certificate, students must do the following:

  1. Maintain a 3.2 unadjusted GPA in all course work.

  2. Attend two of the Honors Convocations each year.

  3. Complete a minimum of 24 hours of Honors Core Courses from the following areas.

    1. Honors Core Courses
A minimum of 12 Honors credit hours must be earned from Honors Core Courses.

    2. AP/IB Credit
Based on AP/IB and ACT/SAT scores, a maximum of 12 Honors credit hours may be earned in the Honors Core Courses.

    3. Foreign Languages
A maximum of 8 Honors credit hours may be earned by completing the second year of a foreign language. The courses must be taken at the university level and in the same language. If the initial placement is at the 2020 level, an additional course in literature or culture must substitute for 2010 (after taking 2020 and receiving at least a grade of “B.”

    4. Honors Departmental Courses
A maximum of 12 Honors credit hours may be earned by completing any combination of Honors Departmental Courses. Note that some of these courses may have prerequisites and only admit students majoring in that department, or who are enrolled in the respective college. Not all of these courses are taught regularly, so students should look for them when every new semester schedule is announced.

Students are expected to enroll in Honors sections of University courses when they are regularly offered, as the group Honors experience is preferable. However, in special circumstances, a maximum of two classes may be contracted in order to complete the Junior Honors Program and meet the student’s overall academic objective.

Remember that there are limits on the number of hours in each core area that count toward Honors credit. For example, only the maximum of eight hours can be counted toward satisfying the mathematics area requirement and only the maximum of six hours can be counted toward satisfying the history area requirement, even if more hours of Honors math or history are taken.

Entering freshmen must enroll for at least three hours of Honors classes in their first semester in order to remain in good standing in the College.
