Our first field outing of 1999 was to Apalachicola National Forest in the Florida panhandle, on the weekend of April 9-11. As many of us have interests in natural history we document all of our herp outings with field notes and photographs where possible. We compiled a list of specimens from the Apalachicola trip, with links to photos of a few specimens. In addition to reptiles and amphibians, we keep an eye out for unique flora from the region like pitcher plants Sarracenia flava (yellow pitcher plant) and Sarracenia purpurea (purple pitcher plant). These carnivorous plants trap and consume insects in their tubular leaf to satisfy their nitrogen needs.
Our most recent outting was to Sand Springs in Macon County, Alabama. We had a good turnout with 11 Society members and friends joining in. Historically this site has been very productive for emeritus herpetology professor at Auburn, Dr. Bob Mount. We had good success; a list of the specimens we found will be added to this page soon!
