Courses and Schedule

Students must complete 12 hours of CTSE courses, 3 hours of CTRD, and 15 hours of FLSP or FLFR courses for a total of 30 semester hours.

CTSE 7546 Evaluation of Program in Foreign Language Education 3 Fall Semester Course materials available on Web. Asynchronous streaming video lectures, synchronous lecture/discussion/presentations (synchronous streaming video and chat), student oral presentations (submitted as Power Point presentation).  Lecture/discussion sessions will be archived. Two on-campus weekend seminars: 1) orientation: technology, library facilities, introduction: communicative language teaching and testing, 2) indirect measurement, MLAT, special reports. Communicate via e-mail and message boards.  Projects submitted via WebCT .
CTSE 7536 Organization of Programs:  Foreign Languages Spring Semester See CTSE 7546 for general description.  Two on-campus weekend seminars: 1) orientation to technology, introduction to reading theory & thematic units, 2) introduction to WebQuest , supervised work on thematic units with access to materials in LRC. Final project submitted via WebCT . Communicate via e-mail and message boards
CTSE 7526 Curriculum and Teaching:  Foreign Languages  3 Summer  first five weeks See CTSE 7546 for general description.  Two on-campus weekend seminars: 1) ethnographic tools, develop questions, find secondary sources, terms and models, 2) reports on interviews and observations conducted on native speakers of English. Communicate via e-mail and message boards. (All library research, observations, and interviews of English-speaking subjects for comparative ethnographic study will be completed during first five weeks.  Students complete ethnography during AU Study Abroad or with speakers of target language in their home communities.
FLSP \ FLFR 6000-7000 AU Summer Study Abroad 6 Summer  last four weeks Students take 6 hours of elective Spanish \ French in an abroad experience during second five weeks.  Students do observations/interviews in the target culture to complete comparative ethnographic study for CTSE 7526.  Communications via e-mails and message boards will continue.
Second Year        
CTRD 6716 Literacy and Inquiry in the Content Area 3 Fall Semester Web-based streaming video. Students evaluate, select, and apply techniques for teaching middle and secondary school students to engage in strategies that increase comprehension.Ú Two on-campus weekend seminars: 1) introduction to technology and preview of course; 2) midterm exam and guidelines and resources for producing and publishing a Web Quest.
FLSP 7976 Seminar: Civilization and Culture of Spain (A special topics course on syntax offered alternate years) 3 Spring Semester Spanish civilization and culture from Roman times to present; emphasis on the relationship between historical and cultural movements. Course materials available on Web.  Asynchronous streaming video lectures, synchronous lecture/discussion/presentations (synchronous streaming video and chat), student oral presentations.
FLSP \ FLFR 6000-7000 Au Study Abroad 6 Summer  first/or second five weeks Students take 6 hours of elective Spanish \ French in an abroad experience.
CTSE 8986 Field Project 3 Fall Semester Students review the literature pertaining to a problem, plan an intervention and collect data.Ú They analyze and interpret the results of their intervention and write a summary of the project following approved guidelines. ÚFinally, they orally defend the results of the field project.

Options for Transfer in Credit: Six hours of Spanish only or French only

Alabama residents only: Two campus studies: Take up to 15 hours in Spanish or French at UA or UAB

Students may take nine hours during the first AU Study Abroad with permission from the Foreign Language Department.
