Sample Course Description
- Semester I: This doctoral level seminar has been designed to provide an objective and analytical perspective of organizational leadership primarily for the public sector yet equally applicable to the private non-profit sector. Individual qualities required for successful leadership in contemporary rehabilitation organizations will be examined and explicated through a variety of topics: Values Determination, Futures Forecasting, Politics, Policy Development and Analysis, Communication, Leadership Case Studies, and Wellness.
- A particular emphasis of the course will be on the examination of individual values resulting in the development of a professional mission statement and strategic plan. Each participant will engage in a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis that will be utilized for the development of an individual strategic plan. The course will begin with micro organizational topics as previously noted progressing to the macro issues affecting rehabilitation agencies.
- Semester II: This doctoral level seminar has been designed to provide an opportunity to view the development of the rehabilitation and special education systems from a historical, policy, leadership, and advocacy perspective. The course will provide (a) a brief orientation to American legal system including legal research; (b) an examination of the historical forces that sought to exclude people with disabilities from American society and life; (c) the effect that advocacy has upon the public policy making process; (d) the effect of litigation and case law; (e) and an examination of selected legislative events of the twentieth century continuing to the present.
- The nature of ethics and professional practice within a values based context will be explored. An overview of ethical theories, professional practice considerations, principle ethics, and virtue ethics will be examined from a leadership perspective.
