Program DescriptionDistance education courses are offered for each of the following graduate programs:
The currriculum is identical for distance and on-campus learners. Each student designs a plan of study in cooperation with their adviser and faculty advisory committee. The traditional M.Ed. degree program requires 16 hours of Music Education courses, 11 hours of Music Education courses, and 3 hours of Education courses for a total of 30 hours. The M.Ed. is designed to meet the needs of experienced, certified music teachers. At the end of coursework, M.Ed. students must pass a comprehensive written exam. Alabama Class A teacher certification is available upon completion of M.Ed. programs. The entire program is available through distance education. The degree may be completed in three semesters (typically two summers and one spring, although fall courses are also available). The Ed.S. degree program requires 11 hours of Music courses, 10 hours of Music Education courses, 3 hours of Field Project, and 6 hours of Education courses beyond the master's degree for a total of 30 hours. The Ed.S. is designed to meet the needs of master music teachers who are seeking a terminal degree in music education, but do not intend to teach at the university level. Ed.S. students must complete and defend a field research project, typically based in their school setting. At the end of coursework, Ed.S. students must pass a comprehensive written exam and an oral exam. The entire program is available through distance education. Consult your local or state education agency for applicability of degree to pay scale or teacher certification. The degree may be completed in two summers plus the intervening fall and spring semesters (4 semesters). See the Music Education Graduate Degrees web page for program advising information. |
