About Delta Sigma Pi |
|
It was not a single spectacular event which brought Delta Sigma Pi into reality more than 80 years ago, but the association of four students (Alexander Frank Makay, Alfred Moysello, Harold Valentine Jacobs, and Henry Albert Tienken) at New York University. Common goals and an intense desire to pursue those goals together were the sparks which ignited the creation of a fraternity which, today, continues to reflect the principles that brought these students together.
The date was 1907, November 7 to be exact, and although there was never any doubt about the purpose of this new fraternity at NYU, it was not until 1914 that a specific statement about the fraternity's purpose was published: Delta Sigma Pi is a professional fraternity organized to foster the study of business in universities; to encourage scholarship, social activities and the association of students for their mutual advancement by research and practice; to promote closer affiliation between the commercial world and students of commerce, and to further a higher standard of commercial ethics and culture and the civic and commercial welfare of the community.
Just what is a professional fraternity? First, it is a specialized fraternity which limits its membership to a specialized field of professional study in colleges and universities offering courses leading to recognized degrees. Secondly, and equally important, is that the professional fraternity maintains a mutually exclusive membership in that field and organized its group life specifically to promote professional competency and achievement within its field as well as its social life. Importantly, the experience of fraternity is every bit as important today as it was in 1907 or 1914 or last year.
Just what is in it for me? First, the professionally oriented fraternity is the medium through which students with common professional interests can develop lasting relationships among themselves as well as with practicing professionals. Delta Sigma Pi chapters emphasize the importance of professional development through regular scholastic programs and conduct extensive tours, forums, speaker functions and research projects designed to broaden the professional experience of its members. In Delta Sigma Pi, academic motivation is the tread running through all chapter programming. And it pays off! Statistics prove members of professional fraternities generally maintain scholastic averages higher than the non-members, due in large measure to the fact they are helped and encouraged by others in the fraternity chapter. Delta Sigma Pi offers its member a solid opportunity for association with alumni. Through first-hand information and contemporary experience, these alumni "pros" are continually helping undergraduate members of the fraternity define their academic, personal and career objectives. Sadly, recent surveys suggest a large percentage of today's college students feel they receive little useful career guidance during their campus days... and are usually forced to declare a major before really developing clear-cut career goals. The demands of contemporary society give the professionally oriented fraternity the opportunity to prepare its membership for living learning experiences which simply cannot be found in textbooks. Delta Sigma Pi chapter members learn to live and work with each other, to share experiences and ideas, to observe and develop principles of leadership, communications and human relations. The practice of tolerance, consideration and mutual respect are important benefits generated from the give-and-take which is found in the chapter experience.
Becoming a member of Delta Sigma Pi... Delta Sigma Pi chapters require that a prospective member first receive an invitation to join, complete an orientation program in fraternity heritage and education, and demonstrate the desire and willingness to perpetuate the ideals of the fraternity. Overall, the period before one becomes a member of Delta Sigma Pi is a time for evaluation by both the chapter and the prospective member. And during this period, prospective members are acquainted with the objectives of the fraternity and learn how their participation in chapter programs and activities can benefit, not only the chapter as a whole, but themselves individually as well. |
