Facebook Resources

Ideas for addressing issues surrounding Facebook and other electronic postings:

  • Review the national policies of your organization regarding electronic postings and the treatment of others. Have members sign a statement indicating that they have reviewed the policies and understand them.
  • Be aware of pictures posted and tagged by others. If you use facebook, know how to "untag" photos. Be certain that the photos represent you in a positive light.
  • Edit and monitor your "wall" postings.
  • Change passwords regularly and maintain their confidentiality.
  • Utilize the privacy functions offered on facebook.
  • Be mindful of personal information posted on profiles. Access to cell phone numbers, class schedules, and home addresses should be restricted via the privacy settings.
  • Review and monitor your group memberships. Be sure to read the purpose of groups that you join.
  • For advisors who do not work in higher education, request an email address through your alumni association to get a .edu extension. This will allow you to create an account on facebook.
  • Be mindful of the future impact of facebook postings such as HR offices researching candidates on facebook and pictures remaining in cyberspace attached to your name. These can be reasons that candidates are eliminated from a job or internship search.
  • Treat your online accounts (facebook, myspace, etc.) as an on-line resume and not a private diary.
  • Create a committee within the organization that will regularly review the facebook pages of other members.
