Drs. Martin, Curtis, and doctorate student Chad Duncan go to Memphis

The team attended a meeting of the Council on Rehabilitation Education’s (CORE) committee on Undergraduate Education (CUE). Held at the University of Memphis, the topic was Towards International Accreditation in Disability Studies.

More than 30 experts representing 30 American and Canadian universities met at the prestigious FedEx Institute of Technology on University of Memphis’ campus. The mission of the meeting was to collaboratively brainstorm and to talk about how to establish a worldwide accrediting process in the field of rehabilitation and disability studies. This will establish a set of standards that are uniform and concise for those who will be working with persons with disabilities.

As the meeting progressed, Drs. Martin and Curtis were assigned to a committee that looked at the “Identity” aspect of undergraduate rehabilitation and disability studies. Chad Duncan was assigned to the “Credentialing” committee. His committee looked at how credentialing could strengthen undergraduate programs and others who work with individuals with disabilities in the field of rehabilitation and disability. The goal of the committees is to develop a white paper that will be presented sometime in 2006.

While the Auburn crew was not in meetings they were seen at Graceland (the home of Elvis), Beale Street, listening to Elvis impersonators, and touring the Mississippi River on the Tunica Queen.

>>>Showcase: Rebecca Parks and Chad Duncan

Master's distance learners came to campus for their second-to-last semester visit (besides graduation)! Highlights from the week of January 24 include: reuniting and hanging out with each other again, the Auburn-Alabama men's basketball game, an all-day workshop on the CRC exam for which they are now fully prepared, learning to "Wimba", and wrapping up (with looming bad weather and great pastries) at Panera's. Oh, and Baron learned how to fly a plane! Best wishes to both Brenda and Patrice who weren't able to be here for health reasons. We hope you both get feeling better soon - our thoughts are with you!

as promised: A Winter's Warm Springs

Shaun from Manchester, GAShaun talks about working at RWSIR (1.5min realmedia clip)

Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation, just an hour's drive from Auburn, offers fantastic learning (and teaching) opportunities for rehabilitation students and professionals. Most Auburn rehab students will have experienced the facility close up by the time they graduate - through class field trips or internships. There are even a few Auburn grads on staff (see photo link below). Most recently, in November 2004, Dr. Larkin and Suzanne Tew-Washburn took 2 classes on a joint trip, documented below:
