Dr. Carlos Garner, Vice President of Regulatory Affairs at Eli Lilly and Company, Shares Insight with Auburn University Students

Dr. Carlos Garner graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Auburn University in 1992. He then earned his master and doctorate degrees from Vanderbilt University. In 1997, he joined Eli Lilly and Company as a senior scientist working in a lab setting.

Today, Dr. Garner has been with Eli Lilly for more than 20 years and is the Vice President of Regulatory Affairs for this Fortune 500 Company. In his current role, he oversees a budget of more than $100 million annually.

On September 27, he presented to students at Auburn University sharing information about the process for new pharmaceutical drugs including discovery, development, translation and clinical development.

Dr. Garner also offered career advice to the students.  He encouraged them to have open conversations with their undergraduate advisors or graduate committee members.  He explained that while he was starting his career at Eli Lilly, he took an active role seeking mentors and learning about a broad spectrum of departments that opened new paths for him throughout his entire career. 

Dr. Garner explained that you can “always get better” and encouraged students to actively continue to learn no matter where they are in life.
