Summer Bridge program under way this week

Summer Bridge is a four-week, residential program for highly motivated, college bound students sponsored by COSAM’s Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. Founded in 1997, the program’s goal is to create a learning community of students who develop the academic and social skills necessary for achieving academic excellence from freshman year through graduation.

Register now for the 6th annual Marie W. Wooten Memorial Run

The 6th annual Marie W. Wooten Memorial Run will be held on Saturday, Aug. 27, on Roosevelt Concourse near Parker Hall. Participants may choose from a 1-mile run, 5k or 10k. Each pre-registered participant will receive a T-shirt (available while supplies last). Online registration ends Aug. 6 at 5 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Marie W. Wooten Scholarship in the College of Sciences and Mathematics. The event continues to honor former Dean Marie Wooten’s memory while propelling her vision for the college. Cao awarded NSF three-year research grant

Dr. Yanzhao Cao is awarded an NSF three-year research grant in the amount of $160,000. The title of his research project is "Efficient and High Order PDF Methods for Nonlinear Filtering Problems." The aim of the research project is to develop high order and adaptive numerical algorithms and the corresponding numerical analysis on nonlinear filtering problems.

Alumni Update: Travis Bray, chemistry ’08

Travis Bray is the founder and executive director of Hereditary Colon Cancer Foundation. He is a colon cancer “previvor,” surviving a predisposition to cancer due to a hereditary mutation. At age 15, and after losing his father and grandfather to Familial Adenomatous Polyposis, Bray had his colon removed to prevent a 100-percent risk of cancer. After working for Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory, and becoming very ill, Bray started the Hereditary Colon Cancer Foundation as a way to educate and inform families and medical professionals affected by the disease.

COSAM alumnus leads sixth grade team to victory during the first Intrepid International Space Station Challenge

Nathan Tubbs (pictured second from left), marine biology ’05, is a middle school teacher in Brooklyn, NY, whose students won the first Intrepid International Space Station Challenge, an experiment design competition created by the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, in partnership with the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) and the Ramon Foundation. Tubbs’ team took first place among the 42 competing teams from five New York City public schools.

Professional school acceptance rates soar for Auburn students

Students in the College of Sciences and Mathematics at Auburn University are consistently accepted to medical school at a rate that is more than 30 percent higher than the national average. Additionally, acceptance rates of Auburn students to optometry and dental schools are at 85 to 100 percent almost every year. The reason for these long-standing statistics has much to do with Beverley Childress, pre-health professions director for the College of Sciences and Mathematics. For more than 19 years, Childress has mentored, guided and established programs for Auburn students who have a desire for a career in healthcare.

Stephen Dobson, professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, has been selected as an Alumni Professor as part of the university’s 2016 Faculty Awards, recognizing some of the institution’s most innovative teachers, researchers and scholars for their unique and distinguished contributions to the university’s mission. The Alumni Professorship program recognizes tenured faculty members with direct responsibilities in two or more of the institutional missions of instruction, research and outreach. Faculty selected to receive a professorship must have demonstrated exceptionally meritorious performance, distinctive competence and potential for continued high productivity and excellence.
