Title: Between Physical Determinism and Uncertainty

Abstract: Most natural and engineered systems can be modeled to a large extent by known physical laws but operate in environments that are statistically uncertain. How do we make predictions, estimate model parameters, and design controls for such uncertain, gray box systems? In this talk I will present a few applications where the reliable estimates of the underlying uncertainties are important, outline some of the computational challenges involved, and offer a few approaches on how these can be addressed.
