Auburn University Theatre to present '90-Minute Butchered Rock & Roll Boombox Hamlet'

By Kelly Walker, College of Liberal Arts

Auburn University Department of Theatre in the College of Liberal Arts will present the "90-Minute Butchered Rock & Roll Boombox Hamlet" directed by Chris Qualls at the Telfair Peet Theatre, April 12-16.

"Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' is considered by many to be the greatest play ever written," said Qualls. "Too often, though, this leaves people feeling the text is completely sacred. For this production, I'm taking the approach of adapting it as one might a novel for the stage or screen. I think an edited approach to the text creates an environment wherein our students can delve into the remaining language with greater depth. The feeling of the piece is driving, disturbing, and ultimately challenging and entertaining. This is a visceral adaptation of the play which includes rock and roll, hip-hop, and edgy pop music that symbolically reflect the Dane's violent, passionate and action-packed existence."

"90-Minute Butchered Rock & Roll Boombox Hamlet" features scenic and lighting design by Matt Kizer, costume design by Tracy Oleinick and sound design by sophomore Gary Castriota. The cast is comprised of Blake Burgess, Marcus Clement, Kelsey Cordell, Chris Cromer, Richard Davis, Shannon Dunlap, Taylor Galvin, Ashton Hatfield, Eli Jolley, Garrett Keller, Houston Mahoney, Brandon Payne, Sarah-Jean Peters, Savannah Renfrow, Richard Trammell, John Tourtellotte and Jamie Yates.

"90-Minute Butchered Rock & Roll Boombox Hamlet" runs April 12-15 at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee performance April 16 at 10 a.m. Tickets are free to Auburn University students, and $15 for the general public.
