Students demonstrate experiences, interests through Auburn's ePortfolio project

Auburn University is launching its ePortfolio project, a venture that offers students the opportunity to demonstrate their skills, experiences and learning through personal Web-based collections of digital works.

Professional ePortfolios include texts, drawings, videos, oral performances and other media that students develop and refine over a period of time. As a product, ePortfolios offer evidence of learning and capacity for graduate study or employment.

"Our students obtain a lot of different skills and abilities during their academic careers, both inside and outside the classroom," said McWhorter School of Building Science head and ePortfolio Development Committee chair Richard Burt. "I don't think they fully appreciate what they have learned when they graduate. Producing an ePortfolio will give them the opportunity to reflect on what they have learned and showcase those skills to their future employers."

ePortfolioThe ePortfolio project was selected based on data indicating that writing, critical thinking, technology, hands-on learning and the preparation of students for future careers are high priorities for enhancing the university's educational mission.

"This process enables students to think deeply about their learning and find connections among their experiences, interests and aspirations," said University Writing Director Margaret Marshall. "An ePortfolio is different in that it allows students to combine materials from classes, extracurricular activities or co-curricular activities, emphasizing the combination of learning experiences that have made them who they are."

Auburn's plan calls for the introduction of ePortfolios to the campus over a five-year period, starting this year with the departments and schools of Art, Building Science, English, Nursing and Pharmacy, plus the co-curricular Study Abroad program and one student organization, the New Media Club. The ePortfolio project's timeline calls for the gradual addition of other academic programs over the next four years.

The project is an extension of the university's Writing Initiative, which provides students in each undergraduate major with guided opportunities to practice the kinds of writing most relevant to their fields of study and future careers.
