The Auburn Athletics Department will be accepting
donations at the Homecoming football game on Sept. 24 to benefit
the Auburn University Student Emergency Relief Fund, which
will aid Auburn students affected by Hurricane Katrina. Collection
for the AU Student Emergency Relief Fund
will occur at several points throughout the main concourse
of Jordan-Hare Stadium.

A record number of new freshmen helped push Auburn
University's fall semester enrollment to an all-time high,
according to numbers released by AU. In addition, Auburn's
freshman class totals exceeded last year's
totals in almost every demographic. AU enrolled 2,468 new
freshmen from in-state compared with 2,178 last fall; 1,729
out-of-state new freshmen compared to last fall's 1,416; and
398 new African-American freshmen, up 15 percent from last
year's 347.

Auburn University is ranked 38th among public universities
nationwide and as the state's top university, according to
an annual survey by U.S. News & World
Report. Auburn is ranked among the nation's top 50 public
universities for the 13th consecutive year. This year's ranking
was its best in the survey since 1999, when it also ranked
38th, and a four-spot improvement over last year, when U.S.
News ranked it 42nd among
public schools.

and director of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station

The Jule Collins
Smith Museum of Fine Art presents "The Quilts of Gee's
Bend" from Sept. 11 through Dec. 4. The exhibition
features more than 60 quilts designed and handmade by African-American
women living in the small rural community of Gee's Bend, nestled
along the Alabama River southwest of Selma.
For academic, social and research perspectives on the quilters
and the quilts of Gee's Bend visit www.auburn.edu/geesbend
, a site developed by Women's Studies in the College of Liberal
Arts. Women's Studies faculty have studied the quilts and quilters
for years and helped contribute to their current critical acclaim.

Raptor Center will unveil a new amphitheater this fall, providing
a place for educational programs about raptors, or birds of
prey.

Two teams of Auburn University veterinarians traveled
to Baton Rouge, La., last week to assist in the care of animals
affected by Hurricane Katrina. Michael
Groves, dean of the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary
Medicine, sent a request to veterinary schools and associations
seeking assistance.

Students in Auburn University's
College of Architecture, Design and Construction have designed
innovative, weather-resistant housing units made of shipping
containers that could replace tent cities as the housing of
choice for victims of Hurricane Katrina and other natural disasters.

Aubie, Auburn University's lovable Tiger mascot, has been selected
for the third straight year to compete for the Capital One
National Mascot of the Year. The competition is under way and
runs through Dec. 15.
