Cheney
speaks to graduates at Commencement Ceremony
Vice President Dick Cheney addressed AU graduating seniors during
a Spring Commencement Ceremony May 13. Cheney's speech, which
lasted about 18 minutes, focused primarily on being prepared
for career changes and humorous anecdotes from his earlier years
in politics. More |

Ground
broken for Transportation Technology Center
U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, who has been instrumental in making
highway safety a priority, was among the many key individuals
present at the April 25 groundbreaking ceremony for Phase I
of the $108 million Transportation Technology Center at Auburn
University. Slated for completion in November 2007, the $54
million Phase I will house state-of-the-art research laboratories,
classrooms, lecture halls, engineering administration, and administrative
and faculty offices for the departments of Computer Science
and Software Engineering and Industrial and Systems Engineering.

Heilman
assumes role of AU provost
The AU Board of Trustees has approved John Heilman as the university's
provost. Heilman, who has served Auburn in various capacities
including professor, dean and presidential adviser, was chosen
from among 10 nominees for the position. More |

Three
faculty awarded Fulbright Scholar grants
Three Auburn University faculty have been awarded Fulbright
Scholar grants to lecture and perform research at institutions
abroad during the 2005-2006 academic year, according to the
U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign
Scholarship Board. Christopher Shook, an AU assistant professor
of strategic management, Narendra Singh, a professor of molecular
biology, and David South, a professor of forest regeneration,
are among approximately 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who
will travel abroad to some 140 countries for the 2005-2006 academic
year through the Fulbright Scholar Program. More |

Survey:
86 percent of alumni would definitely attend again
An overwhelming majority of Auburn University alumni would definitely
attend AU again for their undergraduate degree, according to
poll data released recently by Southeast Research Inc., a polling
firm with offices in Montgomery and Southern Pines, N.C. Eighty-six
percent of 400 randomly selected recent Auburn graduates said
that, if they could do it all over again, they would definitely
attend AU for their undergraduate degree. Another 9 percent
said they would probably attend AU again. More |

Inventor
Vodyanoy wins Creative Research Award
Vitaly Vodyanoy, a professor in the Department of Anatomy, Physiology
and Pharmacology in Auburn University’s College of Veterinary
Medicine, is the 2005 recipient of the AU Creative Research
Award, AU Vice President for Research Michael Moriarty announced.

Museum
gardens named for Susan Phillips
Auburn University is naming the formal gardens at the Jule Collins
Smith Museum of Fine Art in honor of the late Susan Phillips,
who donated $8 million to the museum through her estate. The
Brewton, Ala., philanthropist was one of several benefactors
who were instrumental in efforts in the late 1990s to build
the museum in Auburn. However, she died in July 2003 at age
47 after a brief illness, four months before the museum opened.

Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine unveiled
a War Dog Tribute sculpture April 29 during its Fourth National
Detector Dog Conference, highlighted by an address from retired
U.S. Marine Commandant Carl Mundy. More |

Cookbook
to benefit Foy Spirit Scholarship
Sorority members at Auburn University have cooked up a way to
raise money for a good cause. They’ve written a cookbook. “There’s
a Tiger in the Kitchen” is a compilation of more than 1,600
recipes contributed by members of AU’s 16 sororities. All proceeds
from the sale of the books benefit the James E. and Emma O.
Foy Spirit Scholarship, named for AU’s long-time dean of students
and his wife. More |
