AU ALUMNUS ENDOWS SCHOLARSHIPS TO HONOR AU PROVOST HEILMAN

Susan Karamanian, a 1979 Auburn University graduate, has established a $25,000 scholarship endowment for students in the College of Liberal Arts in honor of AU Provost John Heilman.

Karamanian, an associate dean for international studies and comparative legal studies at George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C., received a degree in economics at AU.

“The John G. Heilman Scholarship honors Auburn students who maintain high academic achievement while selflessly helping others,” Karamanian said. “The pursuit of academic excellence and a strong commitment to the concerns of the Auburn University community are essential qualities of Professor John Heilman.”

“By establishing this scholarship, I hope to help promote the important values that have guided Professor Heilman over his 30 years at Auburn,” Karamanian said.

To be considered for this scholarship, a student must be a junior or senior enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts, have a minimum GPA of 3.6, and have demonstrated both a strong degree of care and concern for members of the AU community and a selfless commitment to others through volunteer service.

“We have so many hard-working and deserving students in our college,” said Anna Gramberg, dean of the AU College of Liberal Arts. “Susan Karamanian’s commitment to our college re-enforces the standard for excellence and recognizes the diligence of our top students. John Heilman has a solid reputation of always going the extra mile for his students, and having the scholarship named in his honor is well-deserved.”

Heilman has held numerous faculty and administrative posts at AU since 1973, including more than a year as provost, four years as a special presidential advisor, and four years in the office of dean of the College of Liberal Arts - one year as co-dean, one as interim dean and two years as dean. In addition, he was a professor in the Department of Political Science for 19 years, served for three years as a coordinator of the doctoral program in Public Administration, a position in which he initiated an exchange program with Twente University in the Netherlands that still exists today.

The College of Liberal Arts, with the recommendation of the Scholarship Committee, will determine who will receive the Heilman scholarships. Each scholarship is for one academic year. Prior recipients may be considered for the scholarship in subsequent years.
