AU Sesquicentennial celebration kicks off this week
Auburn is celebrating its 150 birthday with a Founders Day ceremony Feb. 1 and a big party on Saturday, Feb. 4. The Founders Day ceremony, scheduled to begin at 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, will feature a welcome by President Richardson and the reading of proclamations from Gov. Bob Riley and Auburn Mayor Bill Ham. A letter sent from the White House will also be read. Free cake and punch provided by Ariccia restaurant will be available following the ceremony. The Birthday Bash and City Block Party on Saturday includes a historical walking tour beginning at 10 a.m. The official ceremony begins at 2 p.m. with the Auburn Creed reading, family fun games, birthday party favors, cake and booth displays and all events are free. Music is provided by the AU Pep Band and Alabama Blues Brothers. A fantastic fireworks show caps off the evening at 5:30. The Ralph B. Draughon Library will be closed as well as the Library parking deck and Comer Hall parking lots. Transportation is provided by Tiger Transit from the C-Zone parking lot, beside AU Federal Credit Union. For more information, please visit www.auburn.edu/150.

 

University releases Fisher Report
Auburn University released today a comprehensive review of the university, with related appendices, as commissioned by the AU Board of Trustees in 2005. The report was completed by Jim Fisher, an author and national expert in university management and governance. The report is a comprehensive examination of the university, and addresses two significant matters: the successful search for a new president, and governance reform among the governing bodies of the institution.

Alumni Association requests nominations for directors and officers
The 2006 Nominating Committee of the Auburn Alumni Association is soliciting nominations from alumni and friends of Auburn University. Positions to be filled are president, vice president, and four directors, to be installed in fall 2006. Nominees should be willing to serve as a volunteer in these positions, which requires travel to Auburn at least three times a year. Candidates should include those who exhibit leadership, are active in promoting Auburn University through local Auburn Clubs or similar activities, have experienced success in their careers, and have contributed to AU either personally or financially. Aubie wins unprecedented sixth national mascot championship
Aubie, Auburn University’s tiger mascot, has been named the nation’s No. 1 collegiate mascot for the sixth time and continues his legacy as the most successful college mascot in history.

Barth co-authors book on international banking industry
James Barth, Lowder Eminent Scholar in Finance in AU's College of Business, has co-authored the book "Rethinking Bank Regulation: Till Angels Govern," which was recently published by Cambridge University Press.

Engineering faculty to share in NASA research grant
Engineering researchers at Auburn University and Georgia Tech will share a NASA grant for studies that could lead to the next generation of computer chips for the nation's space program. Faculty members in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in Auburn University's Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, in collaboration with researchers at Georgia Tech, are participating in a NASA Exploration Systems Research and Technology Program grant. Auburn's share of the grant will be more than $2.3 million over a four-year period.

AU professor's book about rise of new Christian right receives national honors
A recent book on the conflict between church and state in America's courts has won the Franklyn S. Haiman Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Freedom of Expression from the National Communication Association. Steven P. Brown, an associate professor of political science at Auburn University, authored "Trumping Religion: The New Christian Right, the Free Speech Clause and the Courts."
