Campus Communicators Meeting
June 3, 2009
The Campus Communicators meeting was held at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, in Room 1103 of the Shelby Center.
Thanks to those of you who attended. Below are the topics discussed and also brief summaries of updates provided from members.
OCM staff brought the Communicators up-to-date on the following:
- Web update -- Provost requested all schools and departments to integrate looks campus-wide; new site for prospective students, upcoming international site, accepted students page and a parents' link being added to main page.
- New Newsmakers story on Shiloh project.
- ESPN collaboration/portal for SEC academic news; three from OCM attending SEC Communicators meeting next week.
- Local/hometown news – The administration would like more community news/"hometowner" stories with contributions from all colleges and schools.
- Story ideas needed by June 18 for football program pages this fall; eight home programs with six pages in each program, two change-out pages available per program.
- Bulletin now online with no print version this year.
- Auburn car tag for the State of Alabama available around August; OCM will send press release to colleges and schools for distribution.
- ODMA "Roadmap to College" poster will be available in July; front of poster will be in English, back of poster will be in Spanish and is sponsored by University Outreach, Alumni and Diversity/Multicultural Affairs.
- "College Town Profile" campus guide due out this summer to replace current campus maps/guides; expect quantity to be between 30,000 and 40,000.
- Snapshots ad in Auburn magazine and Welcome magazine; may be in Birmingham magazine.
- "Family unit" concept used in Snapshots ads will be used for upcoming NCAA commercials: faculty, staff, alumni together.
- Introduced Keith Brewer, new AV supervisor for the Hotel and OCM employee.
- Photographic Services calendar for 2010 will feature the Stadium; sample shared with group; price to be $9.95 this year.
- No ads in U.S. News and World Report and Newsweek this year because of budget constraints.
- Auburn Report delivery updated.
- Green on Green campus-wide event planned for 9/23/09 (fka Outdoor U); event to be similar to sesquicentennial event with dedication of new green space; sign up for participation in the event with Stephanie Bond at bondste@auburn.edu or at 844-5672 before the June 30 deadline; Fabian Cousteau will speak; trying to get the Today Show to attend the event.
- Faculty Awards ceremony is scheduled for 10/27/09.
Updates were given by the following Colleges/Schools/Departments:
- Sustainability: Working on the upcoming campus-wide Green on Green event, climate action plan, sustainability plan on campus and minor in sustainability.
- Outreach Program Office: Cheerleading and AP summer institute, AP teachers, AP administrators and counselors in July, OLLI at Auburn, brown bag at Callaway Gardens, grandparents and grandchildren events and the recently announced community courses flyer in the Opelika-Auburn News.
- Vet Med: Canine Detection Unit has been moved to the CVM; Dr. Rob Gillette now director; receiving $1.7 million DOJ grant.
- Outreach: Working on fall issue of Beyond magazine.
- Extension/Ag: Discussed Dr. Gogue's visit to almost every extension office in the state; focusing on the fact that Extension is "working knowledge people" in research and working on a "working knowledge at a glance" publication; thriving in challenging times campaign both on the web and in print; can be accessed at www.aces.edu. Farmers Market every Thursday from now until the end of August; working on the project "The Art of Agriculture" with the Art Department; water displays next year will focus on gardens as more people are gardening.
- Engineering Outreach: Successfully sent five e-blast; will be increasing use of e-blast to increase exposure of programs and reduce cost of printing brochures; starting in September will offer eight engineering graduate degrees and three business graduate degrees via streaming video, with 60 courses per semester and 500 students.
- Alumni: Summer issue of Auburn magazine recently mailed; sale of Toomers bricks going on now; Fall issue of Auburn magazine will mail in Aug.
- CADC: Redesigning Web site; creating new graduate recruitment materials.
- Liberal Arts: Working on fine arts piece; working on fine arts gala, Auburn Pops to be held in April 2010.
- Office of the Dean of Students: Working on Green on Green event; reception to be held near the end of June for Dr. Ainsley Carry, new VP for Student Affairs.
- Engineering: Annual report released digitally (www.eng.auburn.edu/ar); Alumni Magazine in final stages of prep; Graduate level engineering courses being streamed digitally to students; and Phase II of Shelby Center is under way.
- Nursing: New employee, Leora Wright, attended and introduced herself.
- Education: Keystone magazine finalized; TEAM-Math received a five-year, $1.49 million funding commitment from the National Science Foundation to fund a Teacher Leader Academy for elementary mathematics specialists. Twenty-two mathematics teacher leaders who work full-time in high-needs school districts will receive $10,000 annual stipends and tuition as they complete graduate work.
- School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences: Working on Viewbook; getting ready for Green on Green, fka Outdoor U; utilizing Sharepoint for faculty; memorial service for Forestry student Michael Taylor who lost his life rafting; participating in state FFA event.
- OIT: Sharepoint governance planning meeting to be held; is in pilot project stage right now; department has six developers available now to help with campus projects; contact is Laura Henry.
