Instructional Objective-Understand the ethical and legal responsibilities of the counseling profession.

CASE 2-RECORDS-conditions for releasing info about client;consent to release information; qualifications of those to receive information; is a medical emergency a kind of special situation; can they be tranferred once released; does her status as a minor impact the situation; are there obligations that relate to commnication in a language of the pt/mom? are there laws or other special ethical obligations to substance abusing clients? what is the difference between privacy, confidentiality and privileged communication; what is the family rights and privacy act and does it relate here

CASE 5-ANGRY MAN-do we have obligations to report his threats to law enforcement, intended victim; how can we access his legal records-including juvenile, treatment records; what are or obligations to the client regarding his confidentiality; what do we need to know about restraining orders; what do we need to know about voluntary and involuntary commiitment; do we have an obligation to find out the identity of the intended victim; what are the conditions u nder which confidentiality can be overridden; what are the limits of your capacity to investigate the situation and his background

CASE 6-COACH & TEEN-how does the state define minor; how does that age of the participants figure into the situation and our olbigations; who can we tell what; what are our obligations to her if she is pregnant; what can we talk w/ her about and help her with if she is pregnant; what obligations do we have to other teens' welfare;what kind of referrals are we obliged to or restricted from making; do you have special obligations to the parents if she is pregnant; are we mandated reporters of anything to whom; do we have special obligations to her if we need to report her circumstances; do we have duties in starting counseling to talk about confidentiality; what is an emancipated minor and what rights do they have
