COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is an introduction to as a mental health service profession which operates in a variety of settings. The course examines basic concepts in mental health, the various roles and functions of counseling professionals and the settings in which they work. Ethics and standards of the profession are addressed as well as an orientation to professional school study.

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES

Students will:

• Receive an orientation to graduate education in the professions and will learn to write graduate research papers and to use relevant technology.

• Understand the roles, functions and characteristics of counselors

• Understand the types and methods of counseling service delivery and delivery settings.

• Understand typical client needs and helping processes.

• Understand the present concerns of the profession, including credentialing, accreditation, preparation standards, and public policy related to the profession

• Understand the ethical and legal responsibilities of the counseling profession.
