The tenth anniversary Cahaba Lily Festival will take place on Saturday, May 29, 1999, at the Cahaba Lily Activity Center on Main Street, West Blocton beginning at 9 a. m. The festival celebrates the rare and unique lily that grows in spectacular clusters in the rocky shoals of the nearby Cahaba River.
The morning program will include lectures by the world's leading authority on the Cahaba Lily, Dr. Larry Davenport of Samford University, and Julia Hale, president of Tuscaloosa's George Wood Chapter of the Alabama Wildflower Society who will discuss and display other local wildflowers.
Other activities include the introduction of the 1999 Miss Cahaba Lily. Exhibitions of photographs and other art works will be on view. Winner of the Cahaba Lily ballad will be recognized. Brunch will be served and numerous door prizes awarded. Field trips to an impressive Cahaba Lily site and the West Blocton Coke Ovens Park will follow. The Festival has no admission fee. Contributions for brunch are welcomed.
The Cahaba Lily Festival is sponsored by the West Blocton Improvement Committee with support provided by the George Wood Chapter of the Alabama Wildflower Society, the Cahaba River Society, Nature Conservancy of Alabama and the Cahaba River Authority.
West Blocton is located off Alabama Highway 5 and can be easily reached from Interstate 59/20 at Exit 97. From the junction of Federal Highway 82 and Alabama Highway 5 in Centreville/Brent, take Highway 5 north thirteen miles.
