Concert Choir

The Auburn University Concert Choir, an auditioned group of 100 singers, is under the direction of Dr. Thomas R. Smith, Director of Choral Activities and Professor of Music. Open to any Auburn University student by audition, the group consists of both music and non-music majors. The Concert Choir performs a wide range of choral literature from all periods and styles of music history. During the past years, the Concert Choir has hosted several guest composer/conductors. These have included Jester Hairston, Eugene Butler and the late William L. Dawson. In addition to the campus concerts, the choir is in demand for community concerts across the state and performs across the southeast on its annual Spring Tour. The choir has performed for state and divisional conventions of the American Choral Directors Association. During the summer of 1984, the Concert Choir took its first European Tour with concerts in seven Western European countries. In 1987, the group was invited to tour both Poland and the Soviet Union as representatives of the Friendship Ambassadors Foundation. Since then, the choir has taken three additional concert tours to Western Europe--in 1990, 1993, and 1996. The Concert Choir performs annually with the Auburn University Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the Auburn University Wind Symphony and Marching Band. In addition the choir has performed with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, and the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra. The Concert Choir has also hosted special choral programs. These include a concert of choral music composed by Alabamians and the annual Auburn University Choral Festival. The Auburn University Concert Choir is a regular feature of the Easter Sunrise Service at Callaway Gardens.
