Meet the AUMB Student Leaders

Dr. Corey Spurlin

Well, before we introduce the Drum Majors, we should say a couple words about our Directors and GTAs. Dr. Corey Spurlin (pictured right) is our Marching Band director, leading us for his second season, which means he was a R.A.T. like you guys, just last year! Dr. Doug Rosener is our Assistant Director, and you Percussion kids will get to know him pretty well. Of course, Dr. Rick Good is our head Director of Bands here at Auburn, and served as AUMB Director for many years before that, so you’ll be seeing him around too.

Working with our directors is a crack team of Graduate Teaching Assistants. Dustin White, Staci Wyland, and Allison Parker are all serving in their second year as band GTAs, and they’re all pretty cool. We’ve also got a brand new GTA this year, Jeremy Logan, which means he’ll be a R.A.T. like you guys! If you want to learn more about our directors and GTAs, though, you’ll need to check out the Directors page.

Now, on to our Drum Majors. They’re, of course, the top student leaders in our band. We’ll let them introduce themselves.

The Drum Majors

Nick Smith

Head Drum Major

War Eagle!!! My name is Nick Smith, the Head Drum Major of the Auburn University Marching Band, and senior in Music Education. Before being appointed Drum Major last year, I was the trumpet section leader for two years. I am a music education major and actively involved in everything that relates to the word “band” at Auburn University. I will be graduating in Spring 2009 and in ten years hope to have a Masters and Doctorate teaching college. Look forward to meeting you soon!

Stuart Ivey

Assistant Drum Major
e-mail: iveystu@auburn.edu

Hey guys, my name is Stuart Ivey, and I am certainly looking forward to serving as drum major this year. I am a senior Music Education major and plan to leave Auburn after receiving a Master’s Degree in the Spring of 2010. Prior to my appointment as drum major, I marched with the Tuba Herd and Trombone section and served as Section Leader of the Trombones last year. I have been involved with many instrumental and vocal ensembles here at Auburn and I love spending my free time playing intramural sports and attending sporting events in Auburn and around the area. I look forward to meeting you all soon and can’t wait to experience another great season with the AUMB!!!

War Eagle!
Stuart

Karen Kirk

Assistant Drum Major
e-mail: kirkkar@auburn.edu

War Eagle!! My name is Karen Kirk, and I am one of the drum majors of the Auburn University Marching Band this upcoming marching season. I am a senior majoring in Mechanical Engineering, and I’m also currently doing some really neat undergraduate research here at Auburn in Aeroacoustics under NASA’s request. So, that makes me living proof that you can be a technical major, have some activities on the side, and still be in marching band! If you have questions about how I do it or how it works being a non-music major in the band, feel free to ask me! Or if you have any other questions, feel free to shoot me an email! Hope to see you in August! :)

Karen

John Warner

Assistant Drum Major
e-mail: mccortj@auburn.edu

Hey everybody! My name is John Warner, and I will be returning for a second year as a Drum Major for the AUMB. Before serving as Drum Major, I marched a year on Alto Sax, and a year on Clarinet. In addition to my responsibilities in the band, I am a university Student Recruiter, so I might have given you a tour of campus this past year. I will graduate next spring, and am currently applying to Dental School. I am looking forward to this upcoming year, and can’t wait to meet you all!

War Eagle!
John

Aside from us R.A.T. Leaders and the Drum Majors, there are a few other students you’ll get to know pretty dang well. They’re, of course, your Section Leaders!
