Graphic Design – Area V

Area V – Pre-Professional Major and Elective Courses for Graphic Design Majors at Auburn University,

Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design

(127 Semester Hours)

The following guidelines and restrictions apply:

• No more than 23 hours may transfer in Area V for this 127-degree hour program. A total of 18 hours were specified in Area V by the AGSC as required for this major; the remaining 5 hours may be taken as additional art course work or as elective course work.

• Restrictions on elective transfer hours:
• Developmental, remedial, or technical courses will not transfer
• A maximum of one computer course may transfer: CIS 146 is strongly recommended.
• A maximum of four semester hours in physical education may transfer
• No transfer credit will be awarded for math courses below the state-approved core level of MATH 110 or MATH 112.

• Only courses taught at the freshman and sophomore level at Auburn University may be elected. Courses approved in Area V in other majors may be consulted. Students may petition Auburn University to pre-approve courses selected under Area V that are not mentioned for this major under Area V (contact Joyce Griffin, Director of CADC Student Services, 844.5350, griffjr@auburn.edu ).

· Because of the sequential nature of the requirements, it is strongly recommended that students who plan to transfer to the Graphic Design program take no more than one fall semester and one spring semester at another institution. Although their credits will transfer, students may be delayed in the completion of their coursework in Graphic Design.

• If the student is not able to complete the ARTS 1100, 1120, 1210, 1220 courses or equivalent; and 2 of ARTS 1710, 1720 or 1730 courses or equivalent; then the student may be approximately one year behind.

• Competitive Admissions: To continue into the second level of the Graphic Design Program, Pre-Graphic Design students must submit an unofficial transcript after completing ARTS 1100, 1120, 1210, 1220 or equivalent; 2 of the Art Histories (ARTS 1710, 1720 or 1730 or equivalent); plus at least 6 hours of Core work. A GPA will be calculated from these courses and the students with the top GPAs will be admitted into the second level courses, GDES 2210 and 2220.

• It is highly recommended that students who plan to transfer to the Graphic Design Program at Auburn University should submit an application to transfer by the end of Spring semester when the second level GPA Competitive Admissions process occurs for the next Fall. Due to the competitive GPA requirement for admission into the GDES 2110 Typographics and GDES 2220 Processes courses in the sophomore year, students cannot take any Graphic Design classes until they complete the courses in the first year Pre-Graphic Design curriculum model and are accepted in the GPA admissions process .

• After completing GDES 2210 and 2220, to be considered for continuation in the Graphic Design major, students must submit an unofficial transcript showing the required 2.5 GPA in GDES 2210 and 2220, a portfolio of work from GDES 2210 and 2220, and a one page typewritten statement of intent.

• It is highly recommended that students, who plan to transfer to the Graphic Design Program at Auburn University, should contact the Office of Student Services of the College of Architecture, Design and Construction in order to clarify all academic policies.
