Call to Order: Michael Miller,
Past-Chair, called the meeting to order at 2:12PM. Miller opened by
thanking the audience for their attendance and his appreciation for
having had the opportunity to serve as Chair of the AP Assembly during
the past year. The Secretary, Mickie Jacob, called the roll.
Representatives present: Joe Aderholt, Judy Allen, John Asmuth, Kathy
Harmon, Ellen Hix, Mickie Jacob, Kathryn Jarvis, Greg Lund, Michael
Miller, Larry Moore, Ed People, Miriam Brown Pepinsky, Kevin Robinson,
Janine Slick, Mary Lou Smith, Tom Sparrow, Anne Stewart, and Teresa Vest.
Miller introduced the new Chair and turned the meeting over to
Robinson. Robinson thanked Miller for his leadership and support and
stated that the assembly would follow
Robert's Rules of Order. The minutes were reviewed and
Allen made a motion to accept the minutes as written and Slick seconded
the motion. All were in favor.
Robinson introduced Mike Hubbard, State Representative from District
79. Hubbard stated that efforts now are in progress to put a "Plan B" in
action now that the lottery issue has been defeated. Hubbard mentioned
that the lottery issue had a plus factor in that it increased awareness
of funding education in the state.
Key issues discussed by Hubbard include:
Hubbard concluded his comments by stating that he supports Auburn
University and the district that he represents.
Questions were presented by Robinson and Moore of the AP Assembly and
from one member of
the audience.
New Business:
Robinson asked members to review the listing of AP Standing Committee
appointments:
Nominations and Elections, Grievance, Welfare, Professional Development
and Calendar &
Schedules. A motion was made by Hix and seconded by Asmuth to approve
the lists as
presented. All were in favor.
Robinson asked Miller to address the group regarding a new Ad Hoc
Committee to increase
awareness of the Administrative and Professional employee group. Miller
chairs this committee. Members of the Ad Hoc Committee include Robinson,
Robert Gottesman, Shaun Asmuth, Jim Killian, Roy Summerford and Charles
Martin. This committee will recommend ways to increase awareness for the
Administrative and Professional group on campus. Some of the ideas
discussed include more frequent electronic messages to AP employees and
newsletters.
Robinson asked the members to review a proposal approved by the
University Senate regarding tuition waivers for spouses and dependents
of employees. Robinson stated that he believed the AP Assembly should go
on the record regarding this proposal. After some discussion a motion was
made by Slick to have the AP Welfare Committee study this proposal at
their meeting next week and make a recommendation to the Executive
Committee by November 1, 1999. Vest seconded the motion. A majority
favored this motion and one opposed. Robinson indicated that a special
AP Assembly meeting would likely be called to discuss the results from
the AP Welfare Committees work on this issue. Robinson stated that this
would be necessary in order to make our feelings known to the Universitys
Insurance and Benefits Committee in a timely manner.
Robinson shared information with those present concerning a report he
had received from Dr. Jo Heath, Chair of the University Senate,
concerning the option for arbitration under our Health Plan at Auburn.
Dr. Heath reported a case where the insurance company had rejected a
claim twice and the employee invoked the arbitration option and the
arbitrator ruled in favor of the employee. This was brought to our
attention to make us aware that arbitration on our rejected claims is
available to employees.
No other business was presented. Allen made a motion to adjourn and
Aderholt seconded the
motion.
Meeting adjourned at 3:18 PM
Respectfully submitted, Mickie Jacob AP Secretary
