International Admissions Process

If you are a non-U.S. citizen and either obtained or are in the process of getting a visa  (typically an F-1 student visa), you should apply to Auburn as an International applicant. International students may apply for admission directly to the university or through Auburn Global. Students with less English proficiency may apply to Auburn through Auburn Global. International students admitted directly to the university are listed as either International Freshmen or International Transfers.

International Freshmen Applicants

Freshmen applicants are those who are currently attending or who have graduated from high school but have not attended college (summer following high school graduation excluded).

Submit your Admission Application.

Pay the $60 non-refundable application fee (USD).

ACT and/or SAT scores submitted directly from the testing agency.

TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE scores sent from the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

Submit your official evaluated high school transcripts.

Submit an Affidavit of Financial Support.

Submit a Supporting Bank Letter.

 

International Transfer Applicants

Transfer applicants are those that are applying credits from another institution to Auburn University with the intention of obtaining an Auburn University degree.

Submit your Admission Application.

Pay the $60 non-refundable application fee (USD).

TOEFL and/or PTE scores sent from the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

Submit your official evaluated college/university transcripts.

Submit an Affidavit of Financial Support.

Submit a Supporting Bank Letter.

 

Financial Affidavit/Supporting Bank Letter

International applicants seeking admissions into a degree program must demonstrate sufficient funding to support themselves and any dependents for the duration of their program. The total financial support includes tuition, fees, housing, food, books, supplies, personal items, transportation, and health insurance for a minimum of 9 months.

Financial Affidavit

  • The affidavit must be fully and properly completed (print in ink or type, in English).
  • The form must be signed and dated within one year of the time the student plans to enroll.
  • The financial sponsor must sign the affidavit in the presence of a U.S. embassy or consular officer, a U.S. Immigration Officer, a notary public, an attorney or another official in the sponsor's country who is authorized to administer oaths of verify identity and signature. 

Supporting Bank Letter

  • An original letter in English on official bank stationary must be submitted from a bank or other financial institution in which the sponsor has savings deposits, certificates of deposit, money market certificates or other types of accounts containing readily available funds. If funds are in more than one financial institution, a separate letter must be submitted from each. 
  • The letter must provide a specific amount of funds. A statement certifying that the sponsor possesses "sufficient financial resources" to support you is not acceptable without the dollar figure.
  • The dollar figure must be in U.S. dollars. If not in U.S. dollars, the financial institution must show the conversion rate and/or U.S. dollar equivalent.

  • Letters must be signed and dated within one year of the time the student plans to enroll. Reverification of financial support documentation may be required as part of the US visa application process, at the time of entry into the USA.

 

Independent Credentials Evaluators

Foreign transcripts must be evaluated by an independent credentials evaluator and evaluated credentials should include a listed grade point average (GPA) whether you are applying as a freshman or transfer student. Below is a list of some of the Credentials Evaluation Services which are available to you. You can use any of the resources listed here or one of your own choosing:

*World Education Services (WES) is Auburn's preferred credential evaluator. 

Having a strong understanding of the English language is essential for success at Auburn University. International applicants whose first language is not English are required to demonstrate proficiency in the English Language. To show proficiency you may submit a TOEFL, PTE or IELTS score, take the equivalent of English 1100 and 1120 (English Composition I/II) at an accredited U.S. institution and earn a grade of “C” or better in both or graduate from a U.S. High School. 

You can demonstrate proficiency by taking one of these exams and earning the required minimum. Scores must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

  1. TOEFL iBT score of 79 (Internet-Based Test) 
  2. TOEFL, PTE score of 213 (Computerized Test)
  3. TOEFL, PTE score of 550 (Written Paper-Based Test 
  4. PET score of 53. 
  5. IELTS band score of 6.5 or higher. 

 

Independent Credentials Evaluators

All international applicants must have foreign transcripts evaluated by an independent credentials evaluator with a GPA reported on a U.S. grading scale. Your evaluation should include a document-by-document or course-by-course evaluation. An evaluation from any member organization of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) is strongly encouraged. Commonly used evaluation services are listed below:

International Freshmen Criteria

Admission to Auburn University is competitive. More students apply to Auburn each year than we can admit, and many have strong academic credentials. 

Documents Needed 

Traditional Applicant:

Standardized Test Requirements

The ACT or the SAT is required of all international freshmen applicants. Official test scores must be submitted directly from the testing agency.

Admissions criteria vary based on the total number of transferable hours of college coursework you have completed at the time to plan to enroll at Auburn University. Each category below specifies admissions requirements.

Freshman Transfer (Less than 24 semester hours)

Apply as a freshman transfer if you have taken some college level work outside of the U.S. after graduation from high school and are interested in transferring to Auburn University. 

Documents Needed 

A completed application includes an admissions application and an application fee; an official evaluated high school & college transcripts, official ACT/SAT scores, official TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE scores, affidavit financial support, and supporting bank letter. 

Must have completed at least one core course at another college or university

  • Must have obtained a 2.5 cumulative GPA (2.8 for College of Architecture)
  • Must submit evaluated Final High School Transcript with graduation date and final GPA of 3.0
  • Must submit ACT/SAT scores of 22/1100

 

Transfer (24 semester hours)

You are considered a traditional transfer applicant if you have taken at least 24 hours of college work after graduating from high school at an institution and are transferring credits to Auburn University. To evaluate your transfer courses for potential credit, please visit the Transfer Course Equivalency.

A completed application includes an admissions application and an application fee; an official evaluated college transcript (s), official TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE scores, affidavit financial support, and supporting bank letter. 

Academic Requirements

  • Must have completed 24 or more semester hours at another college or university
  • Must have obtained a 2.5 cumulative GPA (2.8 for College of Architecture)
  • Must have completed 2 required core courses.

The scholarship application can be found on the Auburn University Scholarship Opportunity Manager (AUSOM). Completed application must be received by March 1.

The Auburn University admissions application can be submitted online at auburn.edu/admissions or through the Common Application. There is no preference given to either application.

Your Personal Data

The personal data that the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and the Graduate School collect may be shared internally with academic units, Alumni Affairs, and other school officials with a legitimate educational interest. Data may also be shared with third-party partners according to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) that we have contracted with to perform services for the institution.

Optional Information

By federal law, the submission of certain information at the time of application for admission is optional. These items include social security number, ethnicity, date of birth and sex. At Auburn University, this information is used for reporting, record keeping and data validation.

Disciplinary/Criminal History

All applicants for admission to Auburn University are required to disclose on the admission application prior criminal conduct and prior educational misconduct. The University reviews all applications in which a student discloses misconduct at an educational institution and/or in which a student discloses prior criminal conduct to determine whether the admission of the applicant is in the best interest of the University. Affirmative disclosures do not result in automatic denial of admission.

Incomplete Information

Applicants who fail to give complete and accurate responses to the conduct section of the admission application may be subject to denial of admission, or if already admitted, may be subject to rescission of admission.

New and returning applications for admission to Auburn University indicating a record of previous misconduct at an educational institution or criminal conduct will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the University’s Disclosure Review Committee. 

Applicants will be required to provide additional information to the University for consideration. This information may include but is not limited to, copies of criminal disposition records, background checks and screenings, and educational and disciplinary records. Applicants may also be asked to provide information releases. All information requested from the applicant must be received by the University at least 30 days in advance of the first day of the semester.  The committee reviews applicants whose files are complete and meet all other admissions criteria. The University shall make a determination within 45 days of the receipt of all requested information.

The University may deny an applicant admission if, upon review of all available information, it is determined that denial of admission or re-admission of the applicant is in the best interest of the University.
