AU STUDENTS SET BLOOD DRIVE, VIGIL IN REACTION TO ATTACKS

Student groups at Auburn University are showing their support and concern for the victims of Tuesday's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington with an emergency blood drive and a memorial candlelight vigil.

The blood drive is set for Wednesday and Thursday and the vigil for Wednesday night.

Amy Finley of Trussville, assistant blood drive director for the AU Student Government Association, said the SGA decided Tuesday to take action.

"We knew there would be a need for blood," Finley, a sophomore, said. "(AU SGA President) Brandon (Riddick-Seals) wanted to do something quickly, so we started making the arrangements for the drive about mid-morning yesterday."

The drive will take place Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Bloodmobile will be located adjacent to James E. Foy Student Union on Thach Avenue, directly across from Katherine Cooper Cater Hall.

The University Program Council will sponsor Wednesday night's vigil, which is set for 8 p.m. at Samford Park. The sidewalks through Samford Park will be lined with luminaries and candles will be distributed.

The vigil will feature Riddick-Seals, The Rev. George Mathison of the Auburn United Methodist Church; Bruce Bolt, director of AU Campus Crusade; and the AU Concert Choir and the AU Ensemble. The American Red Cross is soliciting cash donations for the relief effort.

Shuttles will be available for transportation to and from the vigil and will pick up and drop off passengers at the C -Zone parking lot by the old Drill Field and at the Hill Dorms. In case of rain, the vigil will be moved inside to a location to be announced.
