<P><B>ALDERMAN IS 2001 AU COLLEGE OF BUSINESS DISTINGUISHED
ALUMNUS</b> 
     <P>AUBURN -- Wayne Alderman, Torchmark Professor and former dean of the Auburn University College of Business has been named the college's 2001 Distinguished Alumnus.
     <P>The annual award is the highest alumnus honor granted by the college. The 2000 winner was John Stein Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Birmingham-based Golden Enterprises, Inc.
     <P>Alderman, who received his bachelor of science in business administration from AU in 1971 and his master of business administration from AU a year later, was honored at the College of Business' Annual Honors Day Banquet on April 19.
     <P>He was Dean from 1993 until August, 2000.  Under Alderman's leadership, the college made unprecedented progress toward its goal of becoming one of the nation's top business schools.  
     <P>"Wayne Alderman, through extraordinary vision and leadership, led our College of Business to national prominence," said John Jahera, interim dean of the College of Business. "He is most deserving of this recognition for his professional accomplishments in the accounting
profession and for his tremendous success as dean of the College of Business.
     <p>"With the recognition as Distinguished Alumnus, Dr. Alderman joins a group of outstanding AU alums recognized over the years for their significant contributions to business and industry as well as to Auburn University."
     <P>A Certified Public Accountant, Alderman was a senior accountant for Ernst and Young from 1973 until 1975.  He earned the Doctor of Business Administration degree from the University of Tennessee in 1977 and was a member of the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin for one year before joining the AU faculty.  
     <P>Alderman, who has been director of the School of Accountancy and associate dean, is the coauthor of a widely used auditing textbook and has published more than 40 scholarly articles.  He has also served as a consultant to several CPA firms and corporations.
