AU THEATRE TO PRESENT COMEDY 'NOISES OFF'

AUBURN -- Auburn University's Department of Theatre will present the comedy "Noises Off" at the university's Telfair Peet Theatre in February.

The play, which details the life of the theatre both on stage and behind stage, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 17-19 and Feb. 22-26, including a 2 p.m. matinee on Feb. 26.

Tickets for each show are $12 for general admission; $10 for AU faculty, staff and senior citizens and $8 for AU students. For more information or to reserve tickets, call the Telfair Peet Ticket Office at 334/844-4154.

The play, directed by Trish McAdams, professor and head of AU's Department of Theatre, features a cast of nine AU students.

"Noises Off," written by British satirist Michael Frayn, details the misadventures of a group of fifth-rate actors as they perform a farce titled "Nothing On" during a tour of small English towns.

In theatrical lingo, "noises off" refers to commotion in the wings. In Fraynıs play, the noises off are the backstage screams and war cries of the actors who are all wrapped up in a farce of their own.

While the players on the far side of the set hurl out their lines, those on the near side conduct a crazed pantomime with such lethal weapons as a firemanıs ax, a wine bottle, a bouquet of flowers and other slapstick props.

"Noises Off" originally appeared in London in 1982 and opened on Broadway the next year to rave reviews and a run of 553 performances.

AU Theatre will conclude the 1999-2000 season with "Arcadia" by Tom Stoppard from May 18-20 and May 23-27, including a 2 p.m. matinee on May 20.
