BURKHALTER NAMED INTERIM VP FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS AT AUBURN 

      AUBURN -- Bettye Burkhalter, assistant provost for assessment and 
quality improvement at Auburn University, Monday was appointed interim 
vice president for student affairs at AU.
      
 Burkhalter will replace Patsy Barnes, who is retiring, effective Sept. 
1, said AU President William V. Muse.
      "We appreciate the 10 years of dedicated, compassionate and
spirit-filled
service Dr. Barnes gave Auburn University, including the introduction of
Camp War Eagle," said Muse. "At the same time, we're fortunate to have 
someone with Dr. Burkhart's talent and versatility to step into this key 
position at the university."
      Muse said a search committee will be appointed later to identify 
candidates for the permanent position of vice president for student affairs.
      Since Jan. 1, 1994, Burkhalter has been directing an ongoing 
campus-wide effort to assess the university'
s overall performance and develop a plan for quality improvements. She 
was previously director of the AU-based Economic Development Institute.
      Burkhalter, a native of Kosciusko, Miss., joined the AU faculty 
in the College of Education in 1978. She has four degrees from the 
University of Alabama, including a Ph.D. in administration and planning 
and an Ed.D. in educational leadership.
