More than 50 librarians from throughout Alabama and surrounding states are expected to attend the conference, which has a theme of "Medical Libraries in Transition." The schedule consists of two continuing education courses on Thursday and a keynote address and program on Friday morning. "As consumers demand to know more about their medical conditions, health libraries must respond more than ever to provide needed information for both patients and physicians," said Tamera Lee, head of the Cary Veterinary Medical Library at Auburn and the new president of the organization. "Being better able to provide such sensitive information in an innovative, legal way is the crux of the transition that this type of library faces today, and we believe the sessions planned for our conference will help those of us who work in these libraries make this transition." Representatives from libraries based at hospitals, pharmacy schools, veterinary medicine schools and other health-related facilities will participate in the meeting, says Lee. Those who work in such libraries are often called on by physicians, pharmacists, veterinarians and other health professionals to conduct literature surveys and other background research, meaning the librarian must often have a substantial knowledge of the subject matter in order to make the right judgments. "In some hospitals, librarians walk the rounds with a physician to learn more about particular illnesses to be able to get the physician the most current information on an illness or a treatment," Lee said. On Thursday morning, Jane Lambremont, head of the Veterans Administration Medical Library in Alexandria, La., and a nationally respected grantwriting expert, will speak on "Grantsmanship for the Health Sciences Librarian." On Thursday afternoon, Eleanore Stewart, head conservator at Stanford University Libraries, will lead a workshop on "Disaster Recovery of Library Materials." On Friday morning, Marion Paris, associate professor at the University of Alabama's School of Library and Information Studies, will give a keynote address on "Abandoning the Comfort Zone: Making Medical Reference Accountable." Paris will be joined by Joan Lukins, director of pharmacy information at Samford University, and Mary Fran Prottsman of the Lyster Army Hospital, in a strategic planning session, group case studies and simulation exercises. The group will also hold its business meeting on Friday. For more information, contact Lee, the program chair, at the AU College of Veterinary Medicine Library, 334/844-1749. # # # aug95:AU-libmeet
