The event -- from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. -- is being sponsored as part of the Alabama Museum of Natural History's Summer Expedition program. Media will be able to interview high school students and others who will participate in week-long sessions at the dig site from June 18-July 15. Lunch will be served. AU's John Cottier and AUM's Craig Sheldon have devoted a decade of study to the Fusihatchee site. The historic village was one of the major Upper Creek Indian towns in Alabama until the early 19th century. Its residents traded with the French and English and left behind a wealth of artifacts that Cottier says is becoming one of the largest collections in the Southeast. The town was destroyed by Andrew Jackson's army during the Creek Indian War of 1814. For more information and/or directions to the site, contact Cottier at 334/844-2835; or Sheldon, at 334/244-3765. # # # june95:AU-advisory CONTACT: Mitch Emmons, 334/844-9999 (emmonmb@mail.auburn.edu)
