As of May 15, about 850 faculty and staff made pledges or contributions to the university's $175 million comprehensive campaign, Campaign Auburn: The Next Generation. The six-year campaign to raise private funds for academic support is in its fifth year and has generated more than $133 million in support from all sources, including $450,000 from faculty and staff since Oct. 1, 1990. Earl "Buddy" Weaver, vice president for Alumni and Development, said most of the faculty and staff contributions are in the three target areas of scholarships, fellowships and the library. "This show of support for students and academic quality is a good sign to our alumni that the Auburn family really does take care of its own," he said. Family Campaign Co-Chairs Wayne Flynt of History and Athletic Director David Housel said they are encouraged by the show of support by faculty and staff during a time of economic uncertainty for higher education. Flynt, a Distinguished University Professor, said faculty and staff are making a sacrifice that goes beyond normal giving. "I am really gratified that so many people are responding," he said. "I interpret it as people being so committed to Auburn that they put aside all sorts of concerns and grievances in order to give." Flynt said the gifts prove that faculty and staff want to help students. "For so many people to give at a time like this proves that the faculty and staff really do care about the students. There really is something to this ÔAuburn Family' feeling; there is the sense of being committed to something other than ourselves. We've got some good people here and it shows." Housel said he is gratified that faculty and staff chose this time to show their support for the university. "It is easy to give when times are good, but Auburn people are willing to stand up for what they believe in even when times aren't so good--this really says a lot for the faculty and staff at Auburn." # # # may95:AU-facgive2 (EDITORS' NOTE: A release dated 5/19/95 incorrectly stated that faculty and staff contributions to Campaign Auburn totaled $450,000 since Oct. 1, with the year 1994 implied rather than 1990. The point remains that faculty and staff contributed $200,000 over six weeks in response to requests for support.
