Trigere, who developed the art of blending realism and style into clothes design 50 years ago, will speak at 10 a.m. in the Foy Union ballroom. The lecture is free and open to the public. Trigere's presence in American fashion began during World War II, when Paris was out of bounds for the U.S. fashion industry. New York designers responded by developing sportswear, but Trigere reproduced French haute couture with a different style. "Instead of making clothes to order, requiring numerous fittings, she took a short cut," says Gary Trentham, a professor in the Department of Consumer Affairs for whom the lectureship is named. "She made them in sizes, for stores to sell in their French rooms, to customers who could wear them immediately." "While American manufacturers tended to specialize in individual articles of apparel -- coats and suits, for instance, dresses and evening dresses -- Ms. Trigere put everything together, couture style." This is the seventh year of the Grisham-Trentham Lectureship, named for Trentham and given by Charles and Betty Grisham of Huntsville. Trentham started the program nine years ago to bring internationally respected fashion experts to campus each spring. Grisham, a member of the AU class of 1939, and Mrs. Grisham are longtime supporters of AU. # # # may95:trigere CONTACT: Trentham, 334/844-3084.
