-------------------- N E W S R E L E A S E -------------------- Auburn University - University Relations (334) 844-9999 ---------------------------------------------------------------- 4/28/94 Bob Lowry EX-HARVARD CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR TO RECEIVE AUBURN AWARD AUBURN -- William von Eggers Doering, professor emeritus of organic chemistry at Harvard University, will receive the 1995 Auburn-G.M. Kosolapoff Award. Doering, who joined the Harvard faculty in 1967 and became the Mallinckrodt Professor of Organic Chemistry in 1968, will receive the award and present the annual Kosolapoff Lecture at Auburn University on Wednesday, May 3. The public lecture on "As It Was, Is Now ... Whither Basic Chemistry" will be at 8 p.m. in room 151 of the Chemistry Building. Doering, 78, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, who holds the bachelor's and doctorate degrees from Harvard, collaborated with R.B. Woodward on the legendary synthesis of quinine in 1942. He is also a former faculty member at Columbia University and Yale University. The Kosolapoff Award, given by the Auburn section of the American Chemical Society and Miles Inc., honors the late Auburn faculty member. Kosolapoff, who was born in Russia, fled to eastern Asia after the Russian Revolution and came to the United States in 1924. He earned a doctorate in chemistry and later worked for Libby-Owens-Ford Glass Co. and Monsanto Chemical Co. before joining the Auburn faculty in 1953. He died in 1976. # # # april95:doering
