The award is presented annually to a person who has "demonstrated high ethical standards and professionalism in his or her field or specialization and has made significant contribution to advocating, protecting, and extending academic freedom at the university." Last year's winner was AU President William V. Muse. The winner is selected by the executive committee of the local AAUP chapter after a review of nominations, said Josef Renden, president of the Auburn chapter. Ward taught physics at Auburn from Auburn University from 1959 until 1994, retiring as Associate Professor Emeritus. She also taught elementary science on the Alabama Educational Television Network and general physics and physical science at AU. Ward was active in the AAUP and the University Senate, serving as chair from 1976 until 1977. She also worked in the AU community service program for middle school science, the Auburn League of Women Voters and was a member of the Auburn City Council from 1980 to 1986. Ward was cited by her peers for her "tireless efforts to increase faculty participation in university governance and strengthen faculty rights," said Renden # # # april95:ward CONTACT: Renden, 334/844-2636.
