Aubie, who won the national title in 1991, competed against three other mascots, all of whom were selected for the preliminaries competition based on a three-minute video tape. During the preliminary competition, Aubie also placed first. Other universities represented at the finals, staged this past weekend at Walt Disney World, included Wright State, Virginia Tech and North Carolina State. Head Aubie Trey Humphries, a senior pre-veterinary major from Marietta, Ga., performed a one-minute routine during the finals. "We used a fast, techno-country sound and Aubie danced a lot, used props and got the crowd involved," he said. "When you put that suit on, you transform into that character no matter what time it is or where you are." Humphries says his most memorable Aubie moment was "standing on the sidelines near Frank Sanders when he caught the winning touchdown against Florida (in 1994). That, and winning the national championship." "It's amazing to see how different people react to Aubie," he says. "And you get to act in ways that you never would be able to if you were out of the suit." Two other Auburn students who wear the Aubie costume -- Billy Stephens, a junior pre-pharmacy major from Metarie, La., and Mike Murphy, a senior political science major from Birmingham -- also attended the national competition. # # # april95:aubie CONTACT: Humphries, 334/887-5250; and Aubie advisor Debbie Connor, 334/844-4710.
