Vaughan of the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine has won the Reese L. Smith Jr. Distinguished Service Award from the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors' Association. The annual award, named in memory of a long-time Tennessee Walking Horse enthusiast and philanthropist, recognizes dedication, commitment and personal involvement in the walking horse industry. Vaughan, who earned his veterinary degree from AU in 1955, was described as "the single most important person to the Tennessee Walking Horse in 1994 because of his work toward establishing a credibility for the breed with the U.S. Department of Agriculture never before achieved." Vaughan, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at AU since 1977, made several trips to Washington with TWHBEA executives to work out problems that had arisen in interpretation of the Horse Protection Act. # # # april95:walkaward
