AUBURN'S FALL 1995 ENROLLMENT SETS NEW RECORD; TOPS
22,000

AUBURN -- Enrollment for fall quarter 1995 at Auburn University exceeded
22,000 students for the first time in the university's history, hitting a surprising
record of 22,122. AU retained its status as Alabama's largest university.

The enrollment of 22,122 eclipsed Auburn's old record of 21,836 for fall 1991.
And the number of black students enrolled at AU also increased to 1,357 to top the 6
percent mark for the first time.

Auburn's total enrollment had been in a slight decline the past three years
before the increase this year.

AU President William Muse said the record enrollment this fall is indicative
of Auburn's quality.

"We are pleased with the number of students who chose Auburn this year,"
he said. "I'm a little surprised by the numbers, up a little over 4 percent. This is our
largest enrollment in our history and by far the largest number of freshmen. I think
it is an indicator of the quality of Auburn and how attractive it is to students."

James Brown, assistant to the president for minority advancement at AU, said
he is pleased with the annual growth in black enrollment at Auburn.

"Institutions are recognizing the importance of educating African-American
students so that they will be prepared to participate in a global economy as we
approach the new millennium," he said. "It is important for all students to have the
skills to participate in a highly technical world."

The percentage of increase for male and female students was about the same
at less than 1 percent. There are 10,351 women or nearly 47 percent, with men's
enrollment at 11,771, or 53 percent.

AU's largest college continues to be Liberal Arts with 5,091 students
representing nearly 22 percent of the student body. The College of Engineering has
3,824 students. Third is the College of Business with 3,201 students, followed by the
College of Education with 2,636 students and the College of Sciences and
Mathematics with 2,559 students.

The fall 1995 enrollment at Auburn University at Montgomery is 6,284, an
increase of 78 from fall 1994 enrollment of 6,206.
