AU MARCHING BAND DEBUTS NEW UNIFORMS; TRIBUTE TO
GOODWINS

AUBURN -- The Auburn University March Band will debut new uniforms
and perform a special halftime show when it makes its first home performance of
the 1995 season at the Mississippi State game Thursday, Oct. 5.

A gift of $100,000 from Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Goodwin of Birmingham enabled
the band to purchase the 350 new uniforms at a cost of $173,000.

AU Band Director Johnnie Vinson said the old uniforms -- purchased 10
years ago -- were threadbare and faded.

"These uniforms are the true Auburn navy blue and the material is resistant
to fading," he said. "You really can't expect the uniforms to last any more than 10
years because all of the wear, and our old uniforms were in bad shape."

The new uniform sets consist of two pair of pants and two coats, and offer a
wider variety of changes.

"We wanted to be able to vary the look and we also tried to address the
problem of heat with these uniforms," Vinson said. The pads in one coat were
removed and the pants come above the waist, making easier for the member to
move and breathe.

The Goodwins, longtime supporters of AU, the Department of Music and the
band program, will be honored by the AU Band with its halftime program on Oct. 5.

When the old uniforms were purchased 10 years ago, the Goodwins paid for
the total cost, Vinson said.

"The Goodwin family's contributions to Auburn University have been
extensive and include the Goodwin Music building which houses the Department
of Music and the Auburn Band."

Musical selections for the halftime program, titled "A Salute to America",
include Liberty Fanfare by John Williams, American Salute by Morton Gould,
America the Beautiful arranged by Carmen Dragon and The Stars and Stripes
Forever by John Philip Sousa. A fireworks display above Jordan-Hare Stadium will
conclude the program.

"This show was originally performed in 1985 and received the largest
response of any halftime show ever done by the Auburn band," Vinson said.

Vinson said he and other band officials, along with a student committee,
designed the new costumes, adding, "We're very pleased with them and expect
them to serve us well for a long time."

One difference people will not recognize but band members appreciate is that
these new uniforms are one size larger than the old ones. "The last set of uniforms
were too small for almost 10 years," Vinson said.
