ALCOHOL AWARENESS WEEK AT AU FEATURES LUMINARY LIGHTING
AUBURN -- With a theme of "Because We Care," Auburn University will join hundreds of other universities nationwide Oct. 15-21 to sponsor National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness week, featuring a luminary lighting and memory walk.
The week, sponsored by the Drake Student Health Center, AU's Student Government Association, Housing and Residence Life, Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council, reflects "the reality that Auburn students care about each other," says Sherry Bennett, health educator at Drake Student Health Center and program coordinator.
"We have designed a full week of activities in order to create awareness, responsibility and education about alcohol abuse and prevention and other health related issues," Bennett said.
The week kicks off Oct. 15 with a volleyball tournament at 1 p.m. in the lower quad, followed by an Oct. 16 opening ceremony at 10 a.m. where AU President William V. Muse will speak to students on the Haley Center concourse. A wrecked auto will be on display until 2 p.m. on the Haley Center concourse.
On Oct. 17, Carolyn Cornelison, national staff member of BACCUS/GAMMA will speak on substance abuse, addiction and how to help friends who may have substance abuse problems. She speaks at 7 p.m. in AU's Student Activities Center.
On Oct. 19, a 1.4-mile luminary course through campus will be lit at 9 p.m. beginning at Toomer's Corner to bring attention to the number of people who are likely to die in October nationwide in alcohol-related incidents.
Bennett said 2,210 luminaries will be lit, and a memory walk will start at 9:30 p.m. from Drake Student Health Center to "show concern and honor these lives."
There will be a pumpkin sale Oct. 20-21 on the Haley Center concourse to fund educational and programming on alcohol use and abuse on Auburn's campus.
