AU ARCHITECTURE'S 13TH ANNUAL GREAT PUMPKIN CARVE SET FOR OCT. 26
AUBURN -- Hundreds of Auburn University architecture students will be taking carving knife and pumpkin in hand on Oct. 26 to create one-of-a-kind designs during the 13th annual Great Pumpkin Carve.
The students, all architecture, industrial design and building science majors, bring the Dudley Hall courtyard alive with the glow of more than 300 pumpkins carved in the most unique ways, to bring attention to and showcase the talents of AU students.
Carving will begin at 1 p.m., when the students will have four hours to turn their produce into a design masterpiece, says Wanona Satcher of Atlanta, a junior majoring in pre-landscape architecture. The students' work will be judged and prizes will be awarded to the most unique and creative pumpkin carvers.
Students are charged $5 for each pumpkin they carve. Following the event, some of the pumpkins are sold to individuals as well as to local businesses. In additon, student organizations will sell refreshments.
This year, the carving is being opened to the public for anyone who wants to carve a pumpkin, Satcher says. Public carving will start at 3 p.m. Judging of the pumpkins will begin at 6 p.m.
"The money generated is for the student architecture organization, the American Institute of Architecture Students, to be used to help pay to attend conventions, to help fund other community activities, and to buy school supplies," said Satcher, a member of the organizing committee. "This year, we will also be donating money to the American Red Cross."
The public showing will start at 5 p.m., and organizers expect hundreds of university and towns people, with children dressed in their Halloween costumes, to visit the pumpkin carve.
"This is a great time for children and families to attend one of the largest events held by the College of Architecture, Design and Construction," said Satcher. "We think this event is an alternative to trick-or-treating and we encourage the children to come dressed up."
