AU TO GRADUATE 1,119; CEREMONY WILL BE LIVE ON INTERNET
AUBURN -- Auburn University will award an estimated 1,119 degrees at its summer semester commencement ceremony at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, in Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum.
For the first time ever, Auburn will broadcast the ceremony live on the World Wide Web via streaming video.
"Graduation is a special time for all of our students and their families," said AU President William F. Walker. "With this semester's ceremony on a Monday, not all parents or grandparents will be able to attend because of jobs and other commitments. Offering live video over the Internet will allow more people to take part in their loved one's graduation.
"Producing video of graduation for the web is another way the university is using technology to reach the Auburn community and beyond. We want our web site to be a tool that brings people back to campus, even if it's just for a little while on their computer."
Anyone interested in viewing the ceremony should direct their Internet browser to AU's web page at www.auburn.edu. A button will direct readers to coverage of the ceremony.
Of the degrees AU will award, 844 are bachelor's degrees, 219 are master's, 56 are doctorates and one is a specialist's degree.
AU's College of Business will award the most undergraduate degrees with 253, followed by the College of Liberal Arts with 227 and the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering with 87.
The College of Human Sciences will award 76 undergraduate degrees; the College of Architecture, Design and Construction 71; the College of Education 60; the College of Sciences and Mathematics 37; the College of Agriculture 26; the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences five; and the School of Nursing two. Since its founding as East Alabama Male College in 1856, AU has awarded more than 190,00 academic degrees at its main campus.
