AU LIBRARIES TO HOST PROGRAM ON SOUTHERN WOMANHOOD
AUBURN -- Nancy Rohr, an independent scholar and member of the Alabama Humanities Foundation Speaker in the House program, will speak at Auburn University on March 18.
Rohr will present "Southern Womanhood: Myth vs. Reality - The Life of Mary Lewis Clay" at 3 p.m., at the Special Collections and Archives Department of AU's Ralph Brown Draughon Library.
The program critiques stereotypical ways Southern women have been portrayed and perceived. By exploring the life of Huntsville native Mary Lewis Clay (1825-1898), Rohr opens the way to a discussion of the lives of American women across many different eras.
Rohr speaks to various groups on topics such as Huntsville in the 1820s, Madison County's history through maps and the life of Mary Lewis Clay. She has published articles in the Historic Huntsville Review and Silver magazine.
The Alabama Humanities Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and celebration of the humanities in Alabama and funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and corporate and individual donors.
