'BIG LITTLE ART SHOW' FEATURES WORKS BY AU STUDENTS
AUBURN -- A big exhibition of little artwork, all created by Auburn University art students, will be on display at the Auburn Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 508 Auburn Drive from March 9 to April 4.
The exhibition includes more than 240 works of art by 152 AU art students who are enrolled in Beginning Drawing and Advanced Drawing, Intermediate and Advanced Painting, Figure Drawing, Intermedia, Beginning and Advanced Printmaking and/or Three-dimensional Design classes.
The exhibition was conceived and curated by art professor Allyson Comstock.
AU Department of Art faculty members -- professors Jim Furr and Leonard LaRoux, associate professor Barry Fleming, instructor Debra Myles and Comstock -- developed specific class assignments with the idea of "small" in mind.
Comstock stipulated three criteria -- the work had to measure eight inches square, it had to have a one-inch border on all sides and it had to be wall hung.
Using those requirements, each faculty member was free to bring his or her own instructional focus to the assignment, and each student was able to apply their own ideas and talents to their pieces. As a result, a wide range of subject matter, media and artistic approaches are represented in the exhibition.
A reception, which is free and open to the public, will be held for the artists at the Fellowship on March 9 from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. The show will be open for viewing each Sunday morning during services and by appointment during the week.
