'A FUNNY THING HAPPENED' OPENS AT AU THEATRE

AUBURN -- Auburn University Theatre's production of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" will open on Tuesday night for a 10-day run at the university's Telfair Peet Theatre.

Tickets for the acclaimed musical are $18 for general admission, $15 for AU faculty and staff and for senior citizens and $13 for AU students.

The play, which won six Tony Awards in 1963, will run from Feb.18-23 and Feb. 26 through March 1. The opening curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. at all showings except a 2 p.m. matinee on Feb. 23.

Produced by Hal Prince, directed by George Abbott and with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" opened in May 1962 at New York's Alvin Theatre and ran for 964 performances.

The play won 1963 Tony Awards for best musical, best libretto, best director of a musical, best producer of a musical, best actor in a musical and best featured actor in a musical.
