LSU TUBA-EUPHONIUM ENSEMBLE TO GIVE CONCERT AT AU
AUBURN The Louisiana State University Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble will present a concert on the Auburn University campus Tuesday, Jan. 22. The free concert will begin at 8 p.m. in the Recital Hall of Goodwin Music Building.
The ensemble will begin its week-long tour with a performance at AU. The LSU Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble was invited to perform at the Army Band's 19th Annual Tuba-Euphonium Conference at Fort Myer, Va.
The ensemble performs both original music and transcriptions for euphoniums and tuba, presenting music from all periods. Members are majors in the LSU School of Music, both in performance and music education, with their major instrument being euphonium or tuba.
Conductor of the ensemble is Joe Skillen, assistant professor of tuba and euphonium at LSU. Skillen has been principal tubist in several American orchestras, has performed with touring ensembles across the U.S., Europe and Russia and presented solo performances in the United States, Germany, Italy and Sweden.
In 1997, Skillen was one of five Americans invited to participate in the Verso il Millenio solo tuba competition in Riva del Garda, Italy where he placed in the top 10 of the 30 competitors from around the world. Following that performance he returned to America and won first prize in the Artist Division of the prestigious Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba festival.
