Management Procedures For
Used Fluorescent Bulbs
Auburn University has developed a program to recycle four-foot and eight-foot fluorescent light bulbs. At this time we are not accepting any other type of fluorescent bulbs, broken fluorescent bulbs or incandescent bulbs. If you break a light bulb throw it into the dumpster. In order for us to minimize the time and effort involved in recycling you must follow a few simple rules.
We can not accept incandescent bulbs.
Packaging
The recycler will only accept bulbs in the original lamp box or boxes purchased from them. If the original box is not usable, you may obtain replacement boxes from the Department of Risk Management and Safety.
- Place label on the end of box in the upper right hand corner.
- Do not tape fluorescent bulbs together.
- Do not mix different lengths of bulbs in a box.
- Package bulbs tightly without separators or other packing.
- Lamp boxes must be full. We can not accept partially filled lamp boxes.
- When full, securely tape the end of the box.
- Please use clear tape rather than duct tape to secure the box.
- Do not cover the label with tape or obscure it in any manner.
- Fill in the requested information on the label.
- Additional labels may be obtained from the Office of Safety and Environmental Health.
- Store lamp box in a dry location until delivery.

Delivery
Deliver full lamp boxes to the Hazardous Materials Storage Facility on Camp Auburn Road. The facility can accept lamp boxes during normal University hours. We would prefer that you deliver lamp boxes in the afternoon, since we schedule hazardous waste pick ups for the morning hours.
- Place lamp boxes in the designated area at the facility.
- Place lamp box so that the label is clearly visible.
- Do not deliver lamp boxes in inclement weather.
- Securely replace tarp before leaving.
Pickups
If you are unable to deliver your lamp boxes, please call 844-4805 to request a pickup. Lamp boxes will only be picked up on Wednesdays.
Please do NOT accumulate full lamp boxes until they reach critical mass. Arrange to have them delivered or picked up on a regular basis.
