With generous support from the National Science Foundation, Auburn and Tuskegee universities have partnered with Lee
and Macon County school systems to place graduate students (GK-12 Fellows) in 9–12th grade science and mathematics
classrooms, to serve as resource persons and assist teachers with instruction.
Under the supervision of high school teachers (GK-12 Teachers), GK-12 Fellows will:
- Spend 10 hours per week in class or enrichment activities at school (no less than 4 days per week) and 5 hours per
week (some of which may be at school) on preparation (15 hours per week total)
- Assist in school laboratories
- Assist in developing curriculum modules
- Design research activities and provide demonstrations
- Work one-on-one with students explaining concepts
- Participate in after-school enrichment activities
- Serve as mentors and role models
- Take a course in pedagogy the summer prior to entering the classroom
- Assist with the Saturday Academy
- Bring their scientific research experience to the schools
Compensation
- $30,000 per year, plus cost-of-education allowance for tuition, health insurance, and normal fees
Application Requirements
To be considered for a GK-12 Fellowship, candidates must submit:
- Statement of intent (one-page maximum, single-space)
- Two supporting letters, one from the major professor and one from a reference who can address the applicant's
strengths in research, teaching and/or outreach
- Unofficial GRE scores
- Unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts
- Curriculum Vitae
Qualifications and Conditions
- Must be a graduate student in the Departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics
and Statistics, and Physics in College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) at Auburn University, or the
Departments of Biology and Chemistry in College of Agricultural, Environmental and Natural Sciences at Tuskegee
University
- Priority will be given to PhD candidates and Master (thesis) students who have finished their course work. Students
in the earlier stages of their degree program may apply with the consent of their Faculty Advisor.
- Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents
- Complete fingerprint requirements prior to start of employment
- Must commit to participating in the program for one full year beginning each May.
Fellowships are designed to be one year in duration, but are renewable.
